Modernising an Island Brand Without Erasing What People Remember

A good brand refresh should make an organisation feel clearer and more current without wiping away the recognition, history, and meaning it has already earned.

Refreshing an established brand is an exercise in judgment. People may already recognise the name, colours, language, building, archive, or visual habits even when the system itself has become inconsistent. The job is to separate what carries real equity from what is simply old, then let that distinction guide the redesign.

Diagnose before you redesign

Sometimes the issue is visual. Just as often, it is structural: unclear website navigation, fragmented templates, outdated photography, inconsistent messaging, or content that no longer reflects the organisation. A refresh works better when it solves the actual communication problem instead of assuming a new logo will solve everything around it.

Decide what should stay

Recognition can live in unexpected places. A familiar colour, typographic habit, phrase, symbol, or piece of archival material may carry more meaning than the current logo itself. Interviews, old documents, photographs, signage, and previous campaigns can help identify what people associate with the organisation and what should be protected.

Archive before redesign

Historical material is easier to use when it is organised before the new system is built. Archive work can reveal recurring themes, important milestones, visual assets, language, and stories that deserve a place in the future brand. It also prevents the redesign from accidentally discarding material that would be difficult to recover later.

Turn history into a contemporary system

Modernisation does not require removing every trace of the past. Typography, layout, photography, colour, messaging, and digital behaviour can be updated while preserving the organisation’s character. The goal is to create a system that feels current in use, not merely current in appearance.

The website is part of the brand refresh

A brand now lives heavily through its digital presence. Website structure, content hierarchy, search visibility, imagery, and usability shape how people understand the organisation. If the identity changes but the site remains difficult to navigate or out of date, the refresh will feel incomplete.

In Practice

Continuity as a design decision

SWA Architects provides a useful proof point for discussing how an established body of work and history can be carried into a more contemporary brand and digital expression. The important lesson is continuity: the new system should make the existing story easier to access, not replace it with an unrelated one.

Modernise the expression, protect the equity

A good refresh should make existing audiences feel that the organisation has moved forward while still recognising what made it valuable in the first place. That balance comes from evidence, not nostalgia. Keep what carries meaning, improve what creates friction, and give the history a clearer role in the future system.

SWA

SWA Architects is the most established architectural practice in the Turks and Caicos Islands, founded by RIBA Chartered Architect Simon Wood in 1995.
